STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS ON PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE IN THE MATHEMATICS LEARNING PROCESS

Agosto Tome, Meliana Mali, Rui Alegria, Marciano Soares, Augusto Costa

Abstract

Portuguese is a language that is considered difficult by students, even though the language has been used as the official language.  Based on this, the study intends to describe students' perceptions of the Portuguese language, especially in the process of learning mathematics. To get the expected data, this study uses qualitative methods with structured interviews. This research was conducted on students in class IX of the Cristal Junior High School in Dili Timor Leste. The results of the study show that, in general, Portuguese is a language that is difficult to learn, but Portuguese in mathematics is not as difficult as thought, and Tetum is an alternative language used by students and teachers to overcome students' difficulties in learning mathematics presented in Portuguese.
